Prepping Your New Home for the Holidays

Moving into your new home is such an exciting experience! And it can be doubly so if it?s during the holidays. But making a big transition can be stressful — especially if you?re also hosting for the holidays in your new place. Fortunately, there are ways that you can minimize the work that needs to be done so that you can enjoy yourself. Here?s what you should do to prep your new home for a memorable holiday.

Focus on the main spaces

Unpacking from your move can be a big job. So don?t feel like every room needs to be perfect before your guests come over. Concentrate instead on the main spaces. This could include your living room, kitchen, dining room, and bathroom. Get those areas set up first before moving on to bedrooms and other spaces. You don?t need to get out all your holiday decorations, either. Choose some of your favorites to adorn the main spaces and save the rest for next year. It will give you something to look forward to!

Get the kitchen in order

More than likely, food will be part of your holiday celebrations. Whether you?re just doing appetizers or creating a seven-course meal, you?ll want to get the kitchen in order. Before unpacking, do a deep clean — especially the oven and fridge. Guests tend to congregate in the kitchen, and you?ll want it to be as clean as possible. Make things easier on yourself by including dishes that can be prepared ahead of time. Better yet — order out this year. This will give you an opportunity to try a restaurant in your new neighborhood and ease some of the stress. Spend your time setting a pretty table instead.

Spruce up the bathroom

Guests will be using your bathroom, so make sure it sparkles! Your bathroom can also be a wonderful place to add some holiday touches such as a scented candle and holiday-themed hand towels. Make sure you have plenty of necessities available and in sight, including toilet paper rolls and tissues. And it?s always helpful to have a room freshening spray available in a warm holiday scent like cinnamon, spruce, or vanilla

Make it cozy

One of the best parts of the holiday season is the cozy feeling that it can inspire. You can create that same inviting feeling for your guests. If your new home has a fireplace, then prepare to make a fire. This could mean hiring a professional to clean and maintain your fireplace before guests arrive. Add some plush throw blankets and pillows to the area where your guests will congregate. And if you?re the kind of home where you take off your shoes, then provide comfortable socks or slippers for your guests that they can then take home as a party favor.
