Located in the Coachella Valley near Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, California, is a popular place for residents and visitors alike to unplug. Rancho Mirage history

Rancho Mirage really took off as a community after World War II. The Annenberg Estate known as “Sunnylands”, owned by the philanthropists Leonore and Walter Annenberg, became a hotspot for celebrity sightings. They hosted many famous people through the years including Frank Sinatra, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, and Bob Hope. The first resort to open in Rancho Mirage was the Thunderbird Guest Ranch in 1946. Others soon followed, and Rancho Mirage now has more than a dozen luxury golf resorts and country club communities. It was officially incorporated as a city in 1973.

The 200-acre estate home has a beautiful 9-acre garden with walking paths and a nine-hole golf course. The home is open for tours and hosts rotating exhibitions. If you have kids to entertain, then be sure to take them to the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert. With more than 80 interactive exhibits, this is a hands-on museum that children love.

Students in Rancho Mirage are served by the Palm Springs Unified School District. There are two public schools within the city limits — Rancho Mirage Elementary and Rancho Mirage High School. Nellie Coffman Middle School sits on the border between Rancho Mirage and Cathedral City. It is also home to the private Palm Valley School and a campus for the Santa Barbara Business College.
