Los Alamitos history
Los Alamitos got its name from the Spanish explorers who were inspired by the area’s cottonwood trees more than 200 years ago. The original Rancho Los Alamitos covered approximately 85,000 acres. But in 1896 former Senator William Clark of Montana purchased 8,000 of those acres. He formed the Los Alamitos Sugar Company, and the sugar-beet factory complex with homes for workers originated the townsite. The sugar beet industry failed in 1921 because of insect infestation but the town survived and grew. The US Naval Air Station moved its training field to Los Alamitos during World War II, which spurred growth. Today it is the reserve support center for several military units. Los Alamitos officially became a city in 1960.

Los Alamitos has a wealth of amenities to offer its citizens. The Los Alamitos Race Track is a major attraction that offers daytime Thoroughbred racing and live racing Friday through Sunday nights. The city hosts many events throughout the year. Some of the most popular include the July 4 Fireworks Celebration, Concerts on the Green in the summer, a classic car and military aircraft show in October, a Halloween Carnival, and a Community Sing-Along during the holidays.
Residents of Los Alamitos can enjoy many of the world-class attractions that Southern California is famous for as well. These include Disneyland, the Aquarium of the Pacific, Legoland, and Knott’s Berry Farm, among many others.

Students in Los Alamitos are served by the Los Alamitos Unified School District. Schools in the city are excellent with nine of them receiving an A+ rating on Niche. All schools in the district have been named California Distinguished Schools and Gold Ribbon Schools and the district is known as one of the best in the state. Other district honors include 93 National Merit Scholars in the last five years, a six-time National Champion Show Choir, and a World Champion Cheer Team. In addition, their post-secondary education enrollment is more than 90 percent.
