Since the time of its incorporation in 1953, Costa Mesa has grown from a farming community to a thriving suburban destination. The city covers 16 square miles and has a current population of approximately 114,000. It is located 37 miles southeast of Los Angeles and 87 miles northwest of San Diego in Orange County. The southernmost border of the city is situated just one mile from the Pacific Ocean.

Costa Mesa history

The early inhabitants of Costa Mesa were Native Americans who lived on the mesa near the Santa Ana River in a village named Lukup. In 1776, Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded near the area that is now Costa Mesa. Cattle from the mission grazed in the area and a small adobe was built to house the herdsman, which is now a city museum. In 1801, the Spanish Empire granted land to Jose Antonio Yorba which included lands that are now Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, Tustin, Santa Ana, Villa Park, Orange, and Olive. In the 1880s, settlers purchased some of this land from Yorba and created the town of Fairview. Unfortunately, the town did not survive when the railroad was washed out during a storm. At the same time, a community named Harper was also built in the area and flourished. In 1920, Harper was renamed Costa Mesa, which means ?coastal tableland? in Spanish. This refers to the town being on a plateau by the coast. The city grew in popularity after World War II and was incorporated in 1953. Today Costa Mesa is a major commercial and industrial center
