Glendale history
As recently as the late 1800s, the area that is now Glendale was completely desert. In 1885, William John Murphy was in charge of building a 40-mile-long canal that brought water to the area. In 1887 he created the Arizona Improvement Company in order to sell water and land rights in the area south of the canal. He called the land “Glendale” and further enticed investors by building the 18-mile Grand Avenue that connected Phoenix to Glendale. In 1891, Murphy helped to form a temperance colony in Glendale, which attracted many settlers. Shortly thereafter, Glendale was connected to Phoenix by the railroad making it easy to send and receive building supplies. In 1906 the Beet Sugar Factory was constructed, which drew even more settlers to Glendale. Today, Glendale continues to grow and thrive.
