La Verne is located in Los Angeles County approximately 35 miles east of Los Angeles. It is situated in the San Gabriel Valley with San Dimas to the west, Claremont to the east, and Pomona to the south. Historic Route 66 passes through the city as well as California State Route 210. le modern history of La Verne begins in 1837 when Ygnacio Palomares received a 15,000-acre land grant from Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado. In the 1880s, Isaac W. Lord purchased a tract of this land and invited the Santa Fe Railroad company to build its line to Los Angeles through the area. In 1887, Lord named the town ?Lordsburg? after himself and began selling off land. In 1891 Lordsburg College was founded and in 1906 the town was incorporated with the name La Verne. Residents of La Verne began to grow citrus trees and the town was locally known as the ?Heart of the Orange Empire? and actually produced the biggest orange crop in history in 1923. The citrus industry waned after World War II and groves began to be sold off for housing developments. Today, La Verne is a small and thriving progressive city.

The United Methodist Church in La Verne is tied to Hollywood history. It served as the church in the final wedding scene of the 1967 film The Graduate and was also the site of the wedding scene in Wayne?s World 2.
La Verne hosts many fun festivals and events throughout the year. Locals enjoy the annual July 4th parade and fireworks display. Christmas day is very special because the Fire Department sends Santa Claus on a fire truck to visit every home in the city.
The city is home to many parks that cover a total area of 110 acres. There is a sports park facility at Bonita High School that is available for the public to use. It includes a skate park and a state-of-the-art aquatics center. In addition, there are four golf courses in close proximity to La Verne, and the L.A. County Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park is just one mile away. It offers 1,975 acres of parkland for hiking, horseback riding, picnicking, sightseeing, and much more.

Students in La Verne are served by the Bonita Unified School District. Many of the schools in La Verne are very highly rated including Bonita High School, Oak Mesa Elementary School, and Ramona Middle School. In addition to the public schools, La Verne is home to Lutheran High School, Damien High School, et Calvary Baptist Schools. Institutions of higher learning include the University of La Verne.
