Trabuco Canyon?s name dates back to 1769 when Gaspar de Portola headed an expedition into the area. One night they camped on the western edge of a large plateau, which was bordered to the east by a creek. While there, a soldier lost his musket, called a ?trabuco? — one of his most valuable possessions. To commemorate the loss, they named the creek Trabuco, and the entire area has gone by that name ever since. There were tin mining attempts in the early 1900s, and you can still see the remains of tunnels, dams, and a stamp mill from those operations.
