Aliso Viejo history

Aliso Viejo was once part of the 22,000-acre Moulton Ranch. During the 1890s, the Moultons took ownership of that land that was granted to Juan Avila by the Mexican government in 1842. This land has been sold over the years to create other nearby cities including Laguna Nigel and Laguna Hills. In 1976, the remaining 6,600 acres were purchased by the Mission Viejo Company to create Aliso Veijo — a master-planned community with 20,000 homes. Included in that development were 2,600 acres to join the Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park and 800 acres for local parks and other community facilities. Homes began being offered for sale in 1982. Aliso Viejo became Orange County?s 34th city on July 1, 2001. At that time, it was the top city for population growth in the county.
