Mystic Hills Education

Laguna Beach is served by the Laguna Beach Unified School District, which includes one high school, one middle school and two elementary schools. Established in 1934, Laguna Beach High School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The school was also recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School in 2008 and as a California Distinguished School in 2007 and 2012, making it among the top five percent of schools in the state.

Laguna Beach is also home to one private elementary school that is overseen by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange. In terms of higher education, the Laguna College of Art & Design is also located in Laguna Beach. Situated in Laguna Canyon, the small private collage was founded in 1961 by the Festival of Arts and Laguna Art Museum. The school offers bachelor of arts degrees in illustration, drawing and painting, graphic design, animation and game art as well as master of fine arts degrees in painting and drawing.

Environmental Activism

As the only city in Orange County that is protected by a dedicated greenbelt inland and a bluebelt outward, Laguna Beach has a long history of environmental stewardship. The Laguna Greenbelt, which was founded by local conservationists in 1968, strives to conserve a horseshoe of hills and canyons surrounding the city. As a result of these efforts, more than 20,000 acres of wildlands now constitute The Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, Crystal Cove State Park, the Jim Dilley Preserve and the Aliso-Wood Canyons Wilderness Park.

The 7,000-acre Laguna Coast Wildnerness Park also offers opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors, with the movement to protect the land beginning in the late 1980s. The Laguna Beach State Marine Reserve, which extends from Irvine Cove to Treasure Island Beach, was established in 2012 while a North-South bicycle rote with signs was completed through the town in 2014. To further care for the local environment, the city later passed a no plastic bag ordinance and a no plastic bottle purchasing policy for its government.
