Solana Beach history

The early inhabitants of Solana Beach were the San Dieguitos, and the first modern settlers were the George H. Jones family in 1886. At that time, the area was known as Lockwood Mesa. The area around Solana Beach saw development begin with the building of Lake Hodges Dam in 1917-18 and the Santa Fe Irrigation District in 1918, which ushered in an era of expansion and prosperity. In the early 1920s, Colonel Ed Fletcher bought 140 acres from the Jones family and developed the town of Solana Beach. Access to the beach via Fletcher Cove was created in 1925. The city experienced slow but steady growth and officially incorporated as the city of Solana Beach in 1986. The city was the first in the country to enact a smoking ban on public beaches in 2003 and the last in North County San Diego to ban alcohol on the beach.
